Uganda

BeadforLife eradicates extreme poverty by creating bridges of understanding between impoverished Africans and concerned world citizens. Ugandan women turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful bead jewelry, and people who care open their hearts, homes and communities to buy and sell the beads. BeadforLife and GoPhilanthropic, have joined hands to offer the unique opportunity to visit and meet the program beaders and their communities in person.

 



India

Tara Hostel for Boys - TARA is a residential service with an emphasis on education for vulnerable children whose families could no longer provide them with a home. This program located in New Delhi , run by the inspirational Pascal Fautrat, exemplifies how when children are provided with a loving and stable environment infused with education and opportunity, they overcome all odds.

Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute - the Institute was founded in the United States by Arun Gandhi, grandson of M.K. Gandhi, to promote community building in economically depressed areas of the world through the joining of Gandhian philosophy and vocational education for children and their parents. The priority of the Institute is to rescue children from the poorest sections of Indian society who are the first to become victims of criminal gangs; the second priority is to build an institution that serves as a shelter as well as a learning institution where the rescued children will receive basic education.

AVANI / VERALA - The residential school of Avani was organized by Anuradha Bhonsle as an answer to the “Rights of Children” campaign of the United Nations. Rescuing exploited children and educating them is one way of rehabilitating children born in poverty. Anuradha was inspired and supported by Arun Chavan and the Verala Development Society which has been transforming the lives of India’s destitute since the 1960’s.

 

Vietnam

Global Village Foundation
Donate books for a portable library project while you explore Vietnam...The Global Village Foundation was established in 1999 by Le Ly Hayslip, a Vietnamese-American who grew up in a poor village in central Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Her life story has been the inspiration for several internationally published articles, books and films. She is the author of two autobiographical bestsellers, When Heaven and Earth Changed Places and Child of War, Woman of Peace, which were adapted into the 1994 film Heaven and Earth, directed by Oliver Stone and released by Warner Bros. GVF funds and provides construction for kindergartens, primary schools, and cultural and vocational training centers.

 

Cambodia

Journeys Within Our Community: Winner of the Conde Nast 2008 "World Savers Award". Donate a water well, fund scholarship students, offer a microloan to someone wanting to launch a small business. Spend a morning with JWOC and learn about their important initiatives. JWOC seeks to create and support projects that reduce poverty levels and increase educational and economic opportunities throughout Southeast Asia. Their projects provide training and assistance in the areas of health, education, and economic development. By working at the local level and focusing on basic needs such as clean water, education, health, emergency relief and other community based issues, JWOC helps to develop projects that start small, but with outside support, gain momentum and change lives.

 

People Improvement Organization (Phymean Noun): POI provides non-formal education and livelihood training to marginalized groups ultimately reducing the level of poverty in the area surrounding the municipal garbage dumps in Phnom Penh. Phymean was the recipient of the CNN Hero Award in 2009.

 

Thailand

Elephant Nature Park - Visit the Elephant Nature Park and learn how “Lek” has dedicated her life to rescuing and caring for Thailand’s abused and suffering elephants. Her work is internationally recognized and culminated in her being awarded Time Magazine’s Hero of Asia last year. This park is a true beacon of conservation with respect to these precious animals, as well playing an active role in protecting the environment and heritage of the region.

 

Viengping Children's Home - Viengping was a home for all orphaned children in the northern region before being streamlined in 1997 to cater to babies and children up to the age of 6 and girls between 7 and 18 years old. The home also caters to children who are HIV positive from birth and to those orphaned as a result of the deaths of AIDS-infected parents. Viengping was the first orphanage in the country to take in HIV-infected children and as a result, accepted children from everywhere in Thailand. While funded partly by the government, the children still have many needs ranging from furniture to bathroom and playground facilities, to repair of serious building maintenance problems.

 

Guatemala

Safe Passage: Safe Passage is committed to helping the poorest of Guatemala’s children. Hundreds of people spend long days scavenging at the Guatemala City Garbage dump. Safe Passage opened its doors in 1999 to provide assistance to the children of families working at the dump. The organization represents a refuge from a life marked by extreme poverty and dangerous conditions. Safe Passage offers support to cover the costs required by the local public schools. In addition, it provides educational reinforcement and social services so that the children can succeed in school.

 

Habitat for Humanity Guatemala: Habitat Guatemala offers a variety of solutions to families across the country. Full homesbuilt of concrete block and reinforced with rebar average about 50 square meters each and cost approximately $4,800. Recently, Habitat Guatemala has introduced alternate solutions for their families that can not afford the cost of a full home. Some of these include home improvements, or home additions. Others have a decent home but need a new roof, basic services such as water or drainage, or the reinforcement of an unstable wall. For these families, Habitat Guatemala offers medium-sized and micro credit loans. Also available is a two-room progressive home. After the family has paid 50 percent of their loan for their progressive home, they may opt to add additional rooms. This affiliate also provides financial educationand disaster preparation classes to all Habitat homeowners, striving for a secure, lasting solution.

 

AS GREEN AS IT GETS: As Green as it Gets (GAIG) is a charity working to support small independent coffee producers and promoting environmentally responsible agriculture in Guatemala. Have the opportunity to visit some of the families supported by this organization where you can meet coffee farmers and view them (also take part if you wish) in their daily coffee processing.

 

Costa Rica

Sarapiqui Conservation and Learning Center – Linking Community and Conservation Through Education and Ecotourism. SCLC is a non-profit organization working to link communities and conservation through education and ecotourism in the Sarapiqui region of Costa Rica’s northern lowlands. It focuses its efforts in 4 areas: environmental education, community development, conservation and tourism.

A visit to the center offers in depth private one-on-one meetings with the center’s staff who will describe their social and environmental programs including field ecology, reforestation, and recycling projects. Travelers have the opportunity to help local schools, libraries, and conservation efforts.

 

Venezuela

Angel Conservation: Travelers will have a truly rare and unique opportunity to assist in promoting health, communications, cultural identity and sustainable tourism development of the region of Kamarata Valley in Canaima National Park, Venezuela. The Gran Sabana is home to indigenous people who are believed to be of Carib descent, the Pemón, who are thought to have migrated to the region possibly six hundred years ago, although archeological sites to the north have unearthed finds dating back almost 9,000 years.
